Dr. Jose Andrade, Shihan
Born February 3, 1953, Jose Andrade, M.D. is a modern Zenman original of Cuban heritage. In 1966, he emigrated from Cuba with his parents and sister to the United States of America. Dr. Andrade’s interest in martial arts dates back to his childhood in Cuba. He began studying Nihon Goshin Aikido in 1969 under Richard A. Bowe Sensei. He has studied consistently for many years in mainline Aikido schools and in many other styles of martial arts (wrestling, boxing, judo, jujutsu, kung fu, kobujutsu, karate and others) from a variety of well-known and highly acclaimed Japanese and non Japanese teachers; among them, the late Grandmaster Remy A. Presas, founder of the International Modern Arnis Federation. Andrade Sensei earned certification as instructor in Advanced Modern Arnis under his tutelage. Andrade Sensei founded Aikido Tenshinkai of Florida, Inc. in 1995 in Orlando, Florida. In this dojo he teaches Aikido as a comprehensive martial art (sogo budo) to adults and children. His martial style is called Mukei No Ryu Aikido, or “style without form” Aikido. This is a highly eclectic and improvisational type of Aikido. The dojo also serves as a budokan (home to other martial arts). In addition to Aikido, Tai Chi, Judo, Karate-do, Kobudo and Nihon Jujutsu, among others, have been taught here (www.aikitenshi.net). In the year 2000, Andrade Sensei was inducted into the following three different martial arts hall of fames: the American Federation of Martial Arts Hall of Fame as National Instructor of the Year, the United International Kung Fu Federation as Sensei of the Year and the World Head of Family Sokeship Council Martial Arts as Millennium Master Instructor. During the Kokusai Budoin/IMAF 50th Anniversary Commemorative Special Event held in Japan, in March 2002, he was permitted to give an Aikido demonstration as part of the celebration of the 26th All Japan Budo Exhibition held at Hibiya Park in Tokyo, Japan. Andrade Sensei was among the 30 top martial arts featured instructors to perform a demonstration at the 8th Aiki Expo 2005 Friendship Demonstration in California State University, Dominguez Hills, Los Angeles, California. The event was hosted by Stanley A. Pranin, editor of Aikido Journal, respectfully known to Andrade Sensei as the Jose Marti of Aikido, the national hero o.f Cuba. Andrade Sensei also taught Aikido classes at the Aiki Expo 2005.
Andrade Sensei is Kyoshi, Shichidan (7th Dan) Aikido. In 2010, his rank was granted directly from Kokusai Budoin Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He has studied and trained in Japan with Kokusai Budoin Masters of several different styles of Aikido as well as in other budo. He views the healing arts, budo and Aikido as immensely fulfilling and as a unified whole without conflict. As ambassador to Ueshiba’s Aikido, his budo emphasizes creativity, freedom and nonviolence. Inspired by O’Sensei’s ideals, he is free from the patriarchal trappings of traditional Japanese Zen. He integrates his knowledge ofthe fundamental principles and values of budo and Zen into his adopted western culture and his Cuban way of life. He was presented a Community Service Award for his outstanding contributions and support to the Orlando, Florida community by the Stop the Violence-Face the Music Society and No More Drugs, Inc. He also participated in their Street-Wise Drug Prevention video presentation.
Andrade Sensei wrote, produced and directed the videos Mastering Your Mind with Aikido in 2000, Aikido and Zen Secrets in 2010 and Keriwaza and Newaza: Defense Applications in 2012. In 2010, Gary S. Goltz, President of the United States Judo Association (USJAL and Lowel F. Slaven, USJA Jujitsu Chairman, appointed Andrade Sensei as Chairman of the Aikido Division of this organization where, with the help of Edward E. Wilks, Brett Mayfield and others, he established the Aikido Committee/Promotion Board to preserve, teach and promote traditional Aikido in the U.S. Andrade Sensei is also a member of the USJA Jujitsu Committee Promotion Board and has a 5th Dan in Jujitsu from Remi Presas and USJA. In 2012, Willie D. Valdes, Chairman of the World United Karate Organization (WUKO-USA) appointed Andrade Sensei to the directorship of the Aikido division and to the Executive Technical Committee of this organization. Dr. Jose Andrade graduated from the Universidad Certral del Este Medical School, in the Dominican Republic. He completed eight years of diverse university education in specialized and sub specialized post-medical school training from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Wayne State University, Emory University and the University of South Florida. Dr. Andrade is a triple board Recertified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, Pediatric Rheumatology (Sub-Board of Pediatrics) and The American Board of Allergy and Immunology (a Conjoint Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics). Dr. Andrade has the unique distinction of being one of the few triple board recertified physicians in the United States, holding this rare combination of interrelated, yet distinct, specialty and sub-specialty credentials by three different recognized and accrediting certifying Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties. He is also a practitioner of Acupuncture. He received this training from the University Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. He is the Clinical Research Principal Investigator for the Allergy, Asthma and Arthritis Center of Central Florida.
